Genesis We are subjected to the frenetic pace of modern life each and every day. First there is work, which forces us out of bed each morning and determines when we can rest. Then there is family life, which forces us to adopt a rhythm in harmony with the needs of the other members of the household. And finally there is the rhythm set by our other relationships, both with friends and professional contacts.
When we become slaves to these rhythms, we are prevented from listening to the unique rhythm that beats inside each one of us. We allow ourselves to be subjected to a cadence that does not necessarily suit our bodies or favour happiness.
Serge Serfati, one of France’s leading experts in Karate-do, also has a passion for music, a talent he has developed alongside his exploration of karateka. His experience as a percussionist rapidly opened his eyes to the link that exists between musical rhythm and the movement of our bodies in space. In fact, the concept of cadence or rhythm ("hyoshi" in Japanese) already forms a fundamental part of Karate teaching. Achieving mastery over our own internal rhythms and those of our opponents allows us to impose our own rhythms and thus gain the ascendance.
Serge Serfati focused on this aspect of martial arts teaching over more than a decade to develop a new sporting discipline that aims to lock in to your own internal rhythms and enable you to impose your cadence on the universe that surrounds you.
« Balance and efficiency are an essential component of rhythm. This is Hyoshi®, a subtle blend of martial arts techniques, aesthetic movement and human attitudes, all carried out in perfect coordination, like a dance that combines rhythm and efficiency.» Serge Serfati
